JOSEPH Root

(Abt 1640 - 19 Apr 1711)

WorldConnect:
Joseph was mentioned as son in the will of his father Thomas Root of Northampton, who died 17 July 1694.
Other databases suggest his father was a John Root, b. 26 Feb 1607/8 in Northampton, England who married Mary Kilbourne, b. 12 May 1619, Suffolk, England.
Joseph married (1) Hannah Haynes. He married (2) Mary Holton, widow of David Burt, about 1692.

A Joseph Roote was counted in a census in Hatfield, Hampshire, MA in 1679.

Joseph's will said drawn 23 February 1700:
Re "that portion of Estate that God in goodness hath given and , bestowed
upon me to prevent trouble and dissatisfaction amongst my children after
I have left them...my dear & loving wife which I now have she and I
agreed before marriage that as to her estate of Right her own she had by
her first Husband David Burt deceased she was to have it all Returned to
her (if) she survived me (and Mary was to have) fortie shillings...as a
token of my love to her..."
There were specific bequests to "my loveing son Hope Roote.. loveing son
Hezekial Roote, my son Thomas Roote now of Lebanon" who was to receive a
bequest "together with what I have already given him in promoting his
settlement at Lebanon". The portion of his son John, deceased, was to go
to John's children; that of son Joseph, deceased, to his son.
To his daughters, Hannah and Sarah, who had married Hutchinson brothers,
he left bequests of money "out of my moveable goods....together with what
I have already given" to them; Sarah was also to receive "my great brass
kettle". The inheritance were to be given within two years of Joseph's
death. From all this it can be realized that Joseph Root was a man of
means able to subsidize his children's move to a new settlement.

Joseph Roote-Root and Hannah Haynes- Haines were married together 20
December 1660; she is said to have been the daughter of Edmund Haynes
of Springfield. She died 28 January 1690 and Joseph married Mary
Burt, widow of David Burt, to whom she had been married 18 November 1654
as Mary Holton. Burt died 9 September 1690. There seems to be
no record of the marriage of Mary Burt and Joseph Root, but it is proved
by Joseph's will; he died 19 April 1711 at Northampton.
