Angeline LANDRY

(29 Dec 1855 - 17 Nov 1949)

LANDRY or LAUNDRIE

According to the marriage record of her son, Adam Champeau, Angeline was born in Two Rivers.

After the deaths of her parents, Angeline lived with the Sisters of Saint Francis in Bay Settlement. She was living there when she met Joseph CHAMPEAU.

The 1900 Census indicates that Angeline had borne 13 children, 9 of whom were still living.

Married to Christian VAN LIESHOUT in 1908, but the marriage was annulled, and she reverted to the surname CHAMPEAU. Her obituary lists Edward, William, and George VAN LIESHOUT as stepsons.

Angeline was quite a remarkable woman. The following account is given in Reunion: A Beno-Champeau Genealogy by Mary Ann Defnet and Dorothy Lutomski, page 47:

"Angeline was then (after the failure of her second marriage) employed as a kitchen helper in several institutions -- Brown County Hospital, Hickory Grove Sanitarium, the Freiman Hotel in Green Bay, and finally at the sanitarium in Whitelaw. She lived at those places during the week. On the weekends she built her little house on Bay Settlement Road which still stands today. It is located next to the original Champeau house. The only help she needed was in the plastering of the walls, which was done by her son, Isidore.
"'Grandma Champeau,' as she was known to all her descendants and many of her neighbors, was a small, wiry woman, but very strong and energetic. She thought nothing of walking to Green Bay to visit her relatives. She spoke a combination of French and English, and had a penchant for chewing tobacco. She lived for a time with a grandson, John Beno, and then in a nursing home in Peshtigo where she died 17 November 1949 at the age of 94 years.

According to her obituary, at the time of her death, Angeline had 83 grandchildren, 185 great-grandchildren, and 26 great-great-grandchildren. Two daughters preceded her in death.
