Notes
Birth
Baptism record indicates that he was "né ce jour."Christen
Godparents were Louis Bertrand and Elmire Dansereau. Father's game incorrectly recorded as something like "Dosithe".Occupation
This directory also lists a Théophile Bertand, of Bertrand & David, 98 Notre Dame. Same person?Marriage
The marriage record indicates that Theophane Bertrand was an "avocat", residing in the parish of Saint-Jacques. Alexina also resided in this parish. The handwriting makes it difficult to be sure of her parents' names, especially her Father's given name and her mother's maiden name. I will look to other sources to corroborate these. Also, she was a minor, and was given permission to marry by her mother, her father being deceased.Witnesses were Alfred Roy and Louis Napoleon Duverger.
Occupation
Rue Saint Vincent ran perpendicular to Rue Notre Dame, straight out from the old Courthouse (Palais de Justice). Very prime real estate for an attorney! This directory also states that Theo. Bertrand (same address as office) was the secretary-treasurer of the Société de Construction de Maisonneuve. See page 240.
Residence (family)
There is a break in the available city directories from 1878 to 1881, so I can't know when Theophane and Alexina moved. According to the 1881 Census, Alexina's widowed mother, Pelagie Pariseau, was living with them.Occupation
Notre Dame is the street that ran in front of the old Courthouse (Palais de Justice), and Theophane Bertrand's office was directly across the street from it.Residence (family)
195½ St DenisOccupation
Although this seems to be a new location for Théophane's law office, a look at the street section of the city directory shows that he probably didn't move -- they simply renumbered the street. As before, his office was on Notre Dame, between St Vincent and St Gabriel, in front of the Palais de Justice. The 1885 city directory indicates that he was " of Emil Poliwka & Co." Advocate; same address. For the listing and full-page ad for Emil Poliwka & Co,, General Manufacturers, see Lovell's Montreal Directory, 1875, pp. 536-537 (image 282). Emil Poliwka's business was at St Paul Street and Custom House Square, but his home was quite close to the Bertrands, at 301 Saint Charles Borromée.
Residence (family)
Theophane Bertrand does not appear in the 1887 city directory for Montreal.Occupation
Théophane seemed to be working in this business until his law license was extended to Manitoba.Residence (family)
