Old Resident of Cooks Dies
George Roberts, 87, Lived In Community for 57 Years
George Roberts, 87, pioneer resident of Cooks, passed away at his home Sunday afternoon following an illness of two weeks duration.
He was born in Garden October 17, 1853, resident there until 57 years ago when he moved to Cooks. Mr. Roberts has lived in Cooks the past 57 years, working as camp foreman and other jobs in lumber camps.
The body was prepared for burial at the Kefauver and Jackson funeral home and was returned to the family home at Cooks yesterday afternoon. Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at St. Mary Magdalene church, Cooks, with Rev. Fr. MeKevitt officiating, and interment will be made in Cooks cemetery.
He was married to Annie Elizabeth Bowdwine at Green Bay, Wis., in April 1880. His wife passed away in 1925.
Mr. Roberts is survived by five daughters: Mrs. Lillie McLakowky, Mrs. Olive Segerstrom, and Mrs. Mathilda Demarse, of Cooks; Mrs. Charlotte Hafeman, Milwaukee; and Mrs. Ida O’Malley, Rhinelander, Wis.; and two sons, John and George, Jr., of Cooks; and a brother, Jacob, of Garden.

George is listed twice on the 1880 Census in the same family (though on different pages! In one listing, he is 23 years old, born in Michigan, and working as a lumberman. In the other, he is 23 years old, born in Wisconsin, and working as a teamster. Was it a mistaken reference to the same person, or were there two Georges? Update: Presumably one of them actually refers to Jacob Roberts.
