Individual Details
Peter BEAUDOIN
(2 Feb 1854 - 28 Oct 1922)
Pierre was known as "Broad-Ax Pete" because of his skill in using a broad ax. He came to Trout Lake, Washington, with the Menominee Lumber Company around 1900. Menominee's success was the result of eight "roll-away" dams built on the White Salmon River. These finely balanced, roll-away dams were built on logs which spanned the river at narrow points. Each dam was a masterpiece crafted by Pete Bowdoin who came west with Menominee. Expert with the broad-ax and adze, he became the legendary "Broad-Ax Pete." When Menominee's days on the river ended, Pete went on to craft many barns and fine homes in the area.
Pete was known as an honest, hardworking logger and also was known to take a nip or two on occasion. There are lots of stories about Pete and his affair with the demon rum.
One story told about Pete being involved with a bear cub that had run up a tree. It seemed a young man on the logging crew was talked into going up the tree after the cub. After catching the cub, he yelled "now that I have caught him what do I do?" Pete is reported to have said he would get him down and with that took an ax and cut the tree down.
Pete had been ill with pneumonia and was staying with the Anrigs when he died. He was feeling better and was leaving on horseback. Mr. Anrig said Pete started to mount the horse when he fell into the horse and on to the ground. According to his death certificate he was 68 yrs, 8 mos, 1 day old.
When Pete died, the county buried him in a small cemetery in Trout Lake, Washington. Funeral services were held on Oct 30 1922 at the cemetery. Reverend Ernest A. Reed conducted the service. His grave is unmarked but the exact location was shown by Kermit Thoad. Pete died without a family, he had a few friends, and he died like he lived--alone.
