On 29 September 1929 in Prichard, Mobile County, Alabama, he married Willie Dee Gray, daughter of William Henry and Lucy Cora (Doggett) Gray, who was born 5 December 1907 in Monroe County, Alabama. After Willie Joe's death, she married a second time to John Schermer.

Kirkpatrick, about 62, long-time resident of Prichard, died in a local hospital Saturday night following a short illness. Kirkpatrick has lived in Prichard since 1920, and has been in the wholesale produce business in Mobile and Baldwin counties. Survivors include a son, John Donald Kirkpatrick of Alberta, Ala.; one brother Dewey Kirkpatrick, and one sister, Mrs. Lillie Tackette, both of Mobile; and 3 grandsons. Radney Funeral Home will handle funeral arrangements.

Kirkpatrick, Elberta, Ala.; one brother, Dewey Kirkpatrick of Mobile; one sister, Mrs. H. N. Tackette, of Mobile; and three grandchildren. Funeral services will be held from the chapel of Radney Monday, Jan. 25, 1971, at 2 p.m., with interment in Pine Crest Cemetery. Radney Funeral Home, 3155 Dauphin St. Ext., West of Sage Avenue, in charge of arrangements.
