Madison Wisconsin State Journal, Madison, Wisconsin, Monday April 19, 1948, Page 14, Cols. 6 & 7: Grindell Dead at 65. State History Group Curator Dies Suddenly. Platteville---John L. "Roy" Grindell, 65, secretary of the Grant County Historical society and for the last 25 years curator of the Wisconsin State historical society, died suddenly early Sunday at his home in Platteville.

Mr. Gindell was owner of the Grindell monument works Platteville which had been in the Grindell family for over 100 years. He was a former assemblyman and was recently appointed chairman of the state historical sites committee. Friday afternoon, with C. L. Harrington and other members of the state conservation department, he inspected a possible historical site in western Grant county.

History was a hobby.
Mr. Gindell was born in Marion, Ia., and spent most of his life in Platteville. He had owned the granite and marble business for more than 40 years. Mr. Grindell's hobby was collecting historical relics and interesting museum specimens. Many of the specimens came from the surrounding lead and zinc region of Wisconsin. Many "fool's gold" stones were placed in the cement in front of the office of his granite works, and "you'd be surprised to find how many people stop to look at it." Mr. Grindell used to laugh.

Survivors include his wife, five sons, John E. in military service in Heidelburg, Germany; Dr. George, Siren; Robert, Frederick; Edgar, Minneapolis, Minn., and Richard, at home, his mother, Mrs. Clara Kyle Grindell, Platteville; a brother, Donald, Dallas, Tex.; a sister, Mrs. Ada Lambeth, Baltimore, Md., and eight granddaughters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Thomas funeral home. Dr. H. C. Culver of the First Methodist church will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.
