Edwin Merle ("Buster") Painter was born 5 January 1908, Bakersfield, California. He attended and graduated from Stanford University. He worked for Hughes Aircraft as an aeronautical engineer in charge of the landing gear hydraulics on the "Spruce Goose," the legnedary brainchild of Hughes founder, Howard Hughes. He retired in 1964 and moved to Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara County, California.
Buster married Thelma McKee on 11 June 1932 in Bakersfield. Thelma died 8 May 1993 in Santa Barbara, California, and Buster died there on 28 August 1993.
