John Ellis Sparks

Sparks, 89, of 109 Belford Ave., a resident of Mesa County for 36 years, died about 11 a.m. Thursday in Lincoln Park Hospital. He had been in ill health for three years. A retired farmer , Mr. Sparks operated a ranch in the Pomona area for 10 years, then farmed near Fruitvale for another two. The Sparks came here from Onidasic, S.D., in 1925. They had homesteaded near Ft. Pierre, S. D. in 1906. Mr. Sparks was born in Correctionville, Iowa, and spent his early life there. He married the former Eva Inscho at Ida Grove, Iowa, on Feb. 8, 1899. He was a member of the First Christian Church. Surviving in addition to his wife are a son, J. Harold Sparks of Grand Junction; seven daughters, Mrs. Edith M. Nelson of Torrance, Calif., Mrs. Elma N. Adams of Collbran, Mrs. Marthena J. Spaid, Mrs. Lela M. Zimmerman and Mrs. Olive M. Lehman, all of Grand Junction, Mrs. Ruth Manchester of Burbank, Calif., and Mrs. Lida M. Hagner of Chico, Calif.; 17 grandchildren; and 31 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Martin's Chapel. The Rev. J. Kenneth Baird will officiate. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens.
