Charles Emmett Porter

Charles Emmett Porter, 63, Marfa druggist for many years, died early Friday morning at McKnight State hospital in Sanatorium, where he had been hospitalized for several weeks. He had been ill for many months.
Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon in the First Presbyterian church with Dr. Raymond C. Burns, officiating, and were followed by Masonic rites conducted at the graveside by Hal Burnett of Alpine.
Born August 17, 1892, in Harmony, ark., Mr. Porter attended the schools there and was graduated from the University of Arkansas at Alpine. He first came to Marfa in 1914 and was employed as a pharmacist in the drug store operated by Dr. J. C. Midkiff. The following year, March 14, 1915, he was married to Celestine Kerr. They later moved to El Paso and from there went to Little Rock Ark., where Mr. Porter owned his own drug store.
In 1933, Mr. and Mrs. Porter returned to Marfa and Mr. Porter worked as a pharmacist for R. S. McCracken. Four years late he and Orr Kerr purchased the business from Mr. McCracken, and eventually Mr. Porter bought Mr. Kerr's interest. It was in 1937 that the business became known at Porter Drug. Co.
Mr. Porter was an elder in the Presbyterian church, a past master of the Masonic Lodge, member of the Scottish Rite and the El Maida Temple in El Paso.
Survivors include Mrs. Porter; a daughter, Mrs. Jim Chancey of Odessa; four grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. A. B. Sexton of Mauldin [Malden], Mo., and a brother, Jay W. Porter of Harmony, Ark. Mrs. Sexton spent about two weeks recently with Mr. Porter and with Mrs. Porter in Marfa, returning to her home only a few days ago.
Relatives and friends coming here from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Jim Chancy and children from Odessa, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Kerr of El Paso, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Brown of Hobbs, N. M., and Mr. and Mrs. Donald Tracey of Kermit.
