Wendell Phillip Crumly

On the 1900 U. S. Census of Jefferson Co., Iowa Wendell appears with wife Mary, and children Charley, F. Elmer and Blanch C. Also in the household is Grant Frakes. The next year Grant married Celia's sister Nancy Louisa Kirkpatrick Gonder.

* Graduated from Pleasant Plain Academy in 1890. Studied civil engineering along with other studies.
* Started going on surveying trips as an instrument man at the age of 18. Was elected county surveyor in Jefferson Co., IA in his father's stead in 1889. Held position for 6 years.
* Met Mary C. Kirkpatrick and married after 4 years of acquaintance.
* Was advised by family doctor in 1895 to move to California. Moved to Ontario, CA in 1901. After one year moved to Whittier, CA where he bought a walnut orchard which he operated for 10 years. Also did extensive engineering work in the vicinity. Moved to Woodlake, CA in the fall of 1911.
* In Woodlake, bought "a piece of hogwallow land 2 miles northwest of Woodlake, which had been used for a number of years in raising barley and squirrels." Converted to an orange orchard. [Still in operation in the 1960's -- Jim Crumly]
* Other jobs in Woodlake included the civil engineering job of rebuilding the levee around Woodlake's waters, an inspector job on the building of the highways of Woodlake and vicinity for 1 1/2 years while Byron Lovelace was the county surveyor, a carpenter's job for D. B. Day building nearly all the packing houses in the district and a great many houses in Woodlake and the surrounding country as far as Ivanhoe and beyond.
