Rachel Beals

(13 Sep 1830 - 9 Aug 1906)

Fairfield Ledger, Fairfield, Iowa, Wednesday, August 15, 1906, Page 3, Col. 2: Death Of Mrs. Crumly. Rachel Beals was born the thirteenth day of ninth month, 1830, in Green county, Tenn. She came to Jasper county, this state in 1855, was married to Isaac R. Crumly the thirteenth day of sixth month, 1859, and died the ninth day of eighth month, 1906. Soon after her marriage Mrs. Crumly and her husband moved to a farm two and one-half miles southwest of Pleasant Plain, where they resided during the remainder of their lives. She had lived a widow on the old home place with two of her children, Allen and Emma, since the death of her husband ten years ago.

She was a life-long member of the Friends church a and from early life had been strongly devoted to the faith and principles of the Christian life. She was especially active in the advancement of the movement for peace and arbitration among nations and individuals. It was her firm conviction that the Price of Peace had called his people to a war, not with carnal weapons but with the sword of the spirit, which is mighty in pulling down the strongholds of the enemy of righteousness. She gave much time to the distribution of tracts and other literature on the subject of peace, and believed the time would come which was spoken of by the prophet, when nations would beat their swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks and learn war no more.

Mrs. Crumly leaves a family of six children, three sons and three daughters, and a stepson. Her youngest son died two years ago. She was gathered as a gold sheaf to the heavenly garner at the ripe age of seventy-five years, ten months, twenty-six days. He r body was laid beside that of her husband in the Friends cemetery at Pleasant Plain at the close of the morning services. The funeral sermon was preached by Howard Brown, pastor of the Friends' church at Bear Creek. A large company of people attended the funeral services.
