Individual Details
Hiram Tinsley Kirkpatrick
(16 Dec 1867 - 21 Aug 1940)
Hiram Tinsley Kirkpatrick was born 16 December 1867 at Elm Store, Randolph Co., Arkansas.
Hiram and his brother Albert Newton Kirkpatrick operated a general merchandise store at Elm Store, and Hiram also farmed there. He later moved to Imboden in Lawrence Co., Arkansas where he operated a mercantile store in association with a cousin, G. R. Kirkpatrick (probably George Riley Kirkpatrick). He then lived for a few years in Tuckerman, Jackson County, Arkansas. The TUCKERMAN TIMES of 1911 has an ad for his millinery store, "...with price and style as good, if not better than, elsewhere." The ad indicated that Hiram was employing a "...first class trimmer from St. Louis..." who would give millinery orders her careful attention.
In 1912 he moved to Walnut Ridge in Lawrence County, Arkansas, where he bought a flour mill and engaged in the feed and milling business. In 1920, in an article written about his son, it is stated that Hiram was "...achieving more than substantial success in the operation of this mill, which is run by electric power, and he does a general milling business." He also owned a coal company. At the time of his death, he was operating a neighborhood grocery store in Walnut Ridge. An article written about 1920 describes Hiram as "...one of Walnut Ridge's most progressive citizens..." and "...active in many movements for the betterment of the general welfare." The article also asserted that he was a staunch supporter of the Democratic Party and "...the principles for which it stands."
On 26 September 1889 he married James Madison (Mattie) Reynolds, daughter of James Madison and Minerva Bridges (Foster) Reynolds (Another source lists her mother as Bell Reynolds, Bell probably being a nickname). Mattie was born 23 July 1869 or 25 July 1870 (sources differ), probably in Randolph County, Arkansas, and died 25 November 1893, Elm Store, Randolph County, Arkansas. Hiram married secondly on 22 January 1899 in Randolph County, Arkansas, Thalia Anne King, daughter of William C. and Sidney Ann (Wolford) King. Thalia was born 15 April 1877 in Dalton, Arkansas, and died in Walnut Ridge, Lawrence County, Arkansas in 1949. Hiram and Thalia raised, in addition to Mattie's two children and three children of their own, a foster child of Thalia's sister, Pauline Washrum.
Hiram was a member of the Baptist Church. He died on 21 (or 24) August 1940, probably in Walnut Ridge. Both Hiram and Thalia are buried in Hope Cemetery in Imboden, Arkansas.
Children: Two (3) by the first marriage (one child died in infancy) and four (4) children of the second marriage (fourth child died at birth). A foster child was also raised in their home.
