Mary Kirkpatrick was born 11 April 1844 in South Carolina and died 22 April 1923 in Mississippi. On 25 May 1865 she married James H. Lance, who was born 11 December 1840 and died 30 January 1896. James Lance served in the Confederate Army in Company D, 24th Mississippi Infantry, the same company as Mary's brother William. This company was known as the Caledonia Rifles.

There were eight (8) children born of the marriage.
