William Dave Kirkpatrick was born on 11 April 1842 in Chester County, South Carolina. He moved with his father and mother to Monroe County, Mississippi. He enlisted into the Confederate Army on 1 August 1861, and served as a Corporal in the 24th Mississippi Infantry, Company D. He was killed in the Battle of Shiloh on 8 October 1862. Enlistment papers describe him as being 5' 7" tall, fair complexion, gray eyes and light hair.
