In the 1840's the Sample family opened a hardware store in Mahoningtown some five miles from New Castle. Henry married a Sample daughter, Margaret, and began to assume responsibility for running the store. This hardware store apparently merged with Thomas Kirkpatrick's store in New Castle. Henry became tired of signing his name to payroll checks, so he shortened it to Kirk about 1860. In 1861 he formed a partnership with Issac and his son C.C. Dickson. It was named Kirk and Dickson. Then Kirk and Thompson and later Kirk and Johnson. In 1880, Henry left the management of the store to Charles (age 22) and journeyed west to find a dry climate to relieve his asthma. He settled in Gallatin County in the Montana Territory. According to records in the Gallatin County Court House, he bought a 320 acre ranch from Zachary Sales located 2 miles North West of Salesville (now Gallatin Gateway), MT.
Three years after Henry arrived in Montana, he asked his wife and 2 of his sons to join him. Harris was a junior at Penn State College while Howard was in high school. Henry bought another farm of 160 acres 4 miles west of Salesville in 1884. The same year he and Margaret bought an 80 acre dairy farm for $3500, located at 1511 West Babcock, Bozeman.
About this time Harris bought a 2560 acre ranch 4 miles west of Salesville (now called Gallatin Gateway). Thomas bought a farm near Salesville but lived in Bozeman. Howard returned to New Castle in 1886 to help Charles manage the hardware store. A year later Montana became a state. Margaret died on 9-20-1891. Henry married Susan C. [Hancock] Kirk and they bought a 160 acre farm 5 miles North East of Manhattan, Mt. in 1896. Henry died on 1-25-1902 in Denver at 76 and is buried in Bozeman. His will bequeathed his 3 farms totaling 720 acres to Susan, Thomas, Harris, Charles, Howard and 2 grand daughters, Mrs. George Patterson (age 24) and Mary Harris (age 8). The next year Charles, Effie and son, Herbert, went West to help settle the estate.
