Charles Melvin McNeal

Heart Attack at Ball Game Fatal to Charles McNeal, 66, of N. P. Charles Melvin "Turk" McNeal, age 66, died suddenly following a heart attack suffered at Cody Park in North Platte on last Tuesday evening. Mr. McNeal had made his home in North Platte for the past 40 years, having moved to North Platte from Gothenburg in 1911. He was lead inspector for the car department of the Union Pacific railroad where he was employed 38 years. He retired five years ago.

Charles Melvin McNeal was born at Gothenburg, Neb., September 8, 1885, and departed this life at North Platte, June 10th, 1952, at the age of 66 years, 9 months and 2 days. He was the oldest child of Isaac and Dora M. McNeal (nee Campbell) both of whom preceded him in death. He spent his early childhood and grew to manhood on a farm north and east of Gothenburg. It was here that he met and married Grace Rosendahl in 1907. To this union 7 children were born, two daughters, Cora and Barbara Jean, preceding him in death.

He was always vitally interested in sports, especially baseball, and was acting as scorekeeper for a game at the time of his death. Those who knew him best knew him as a faithful and generous friend, and a kind and loving father and husband. Mr. McNeal is survived by his wife, Grace; two daughters, Mrs. Fern Gress of North Platte and Mrs. Lucille Boyer of Denver; three sons, Chester B., Raymond and Stanley, of North Platte; four brothers, Clarence, Theodore and Warren, of Gothenburg, and LeRoy of Grand Island; and three sisters: Mrs. Katie Cumpston of Gothenburg, Mrs. Hazel Lif of Grand Island and Mrs. Edna Holderness of Lexington. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Friday at the Adams funeral home in North Platte, with Rev. Robert William of the First baptist church of North Platte officiating. Burial was in the Grandview cemetery at Gothenburg.
