George Allan Sutherland Smith

Curry Coastal Pilot, Brookings, Oregon, August 21, 2002; George Allan Sutherland Smith, 74, Brookings, died Aug. 17, 2002, at the Roseburg VA Hospital. He was born Nov. 18, 1927, in Ten Sleep, Wyo., to Ross W. and Ethel Mae (Smith) Sutherland. He moved often while growing up, settling in Ukiah, Calif., in the 1940s. Mr. Sutherland served in the Army at the end of World War II stationed in Japan. He married Betty Jean Smith Aug. 7, 1951. For 13 years he worked for California State Forestry and then was a truck driver in Northern California for many years. In 1977 he moved to Redmond and moved to Brookings in 1994. He was a lifetime member of VFW chapter 1900. Survivors include his wife of Brookings; daughter and son-in-law, Rachel and Michael Crump of Lake Oswego; son and daughter-in-law, Jesse and Kay Sutherland of Kelseyville, Calif.; daughter, Helon Smith of Grants Pass; daughter and son-in-law, Delores and Bob Reed of Union City, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law, Aaron and Tami Smith of Redmond; 16 grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents and grandson, Nicolas Smith. No services are planned. Remembrances may be made to Chetco Community Public Library.
