Betty Jean (Etter) Smith of Brookings died Jan. 21 of natural causes. She was 71. No services are planned at this time. Mrs. Smith was born July 31, 1933, in Eureka, Calif., to Adrian and Gertrude Etter. She graduated from Ukiah High School in 1951. She married George Smith on Aug. 7, 1951, in Carson City, Nev. Mrs. Smith worked as a nurse's aide for 30 years. She lived in Redmond from 1977 to 1993. Survivors include two sons, Jesse Sutherland of Kelseyville, Calif. and Aaron Smith of Redmond; three daughters, Rachel Crump of Portland, Helon Smith of Grants Pass and Delores Reed of Union City, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and one grandson. Memorial contributions may be made to a local hospice or library of one's choice. Redwood Memorial Chapel and Crematory is in charge of arrangements.
