Indiana Gazette, Indiana, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Sunday, May 5, 1996, Page 11, Cols. 2-4: One killed, traffic snarled 3 hours. Buchanan, Va. (AP) ---An Illinois trucker was killed, three people were injured and traffic tied up for three hours Saturday after a semi slammed into the back of another tractor-trailer that had slowed because of road construction. Merritt Kirkpatrick, 62, of Mount Vernon, Ill., was pronounced dead at the scene after his truck, which was carrying two semi-truck cabs, smashed into the back of another truck on southbound interstate 81 near Buchanan, the state police said. State Trooper, Malcolm Austin said Kirkpatrick, who was traveling near the normal speed limit, hit the truck that had stopped or slowed because of road paving about 12:30 p.m. Austin said that collision pushed the second tractor-trailer into the back of a car, which was in turn pushed into other vehicles in from of it. Five vehicles were involved in the wreck. Three people were taken to Roanoke Memorial Hospital. Shirley Bond, 49, of Phoenixville, Pa., was treated and released. Two juveniles from Luray also were injured. One was treated and released; the other was hospitalized in stable condition. Austin said traffic was backed up for nearly three hours while hazardous materials crews cleaned up fuel, oil and wreckage.
