On the 1880 U. S. Census taken 8th June 1880, at the City of Quincy, Adams, Co., Illinois, Amaltha Loper appears with her children Lucy, Carrie, Effie, William, Reuben and Fred. Her brother John Hanks and sister Belle Hanks are also in the household. Amaltha is house keeper, Lucy a domestic, Carrie a dress maker, Effie a domestic, William a laborer, Fred is at school, John is a farmer and Belle is a domestic. Reuben is listed as having hemmorage of the bowels.

Mrs. Amntha Jane Loper passed from this life to a brighter land at 11:35 Tuesday evening. Mrs. Loper was born on August 22nd, 1830, of German parentage, in Melrose township, six miles east of Quincy. She was in her 61st year and has almost constantly been a resident of this county. She leaves five children to mourn a much beloved and devoted mother, two daughters and three sons, namely; Mrs. W. G. Higginbotham of Quincy; Mrs. M. A. Felmelie, of Chicago, and William, Ruben and Freddie of this city. Mrs. Loper was well-known throughout the county, and she leaves friends numbering by the score. Her children have the sympathy of the community. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 this afternoon from the family residence, 316 South Fifth street. Friends of the family are invited to attend.
