Mary Ann Hanks

On the 1850 U. S. Census of Melrose, Adams Co., Illinois, Chancey Hosier appears with his wife Mary A. and sons John D. C. and Joseph. Chancey is listed as a farmer.

In Mary's letter to Chancey's sister, Sarah Black, Mary states Chancey is in California at the Gold Rush. He left in April 22, 1850 and her letter was dated September 26, 1850. Mary Ann evidently still considered him as in the home and gave that information to the census taker.

Quincy, Adams County Illinois Sept 26 1850

Dear Sir
It is with pleasure I now sit down to write to you to let you know how we are and where we are myself and two children are well a hope you are enjoying the _______blessing with sorrowful feelings I have to tell you that your Brother has gone to California in search of a hidden treasure. Chancy started the 22d day of April last. I have not received but one letter from him since he started, but I have still heard from him I am now looking a letter from him. The last account I heard from him he expected to get into the gold region the first of August. They were all well and in good spirits. I hope he returns home again in safety, when you receive this you will know how to sympathize with me. I and Chancy were Married on the 19th Nov. 1846. We have two children the oldest we call John Don Carlos the babe’s name Joseph. William Hosier married my sister Nancy Hanks. William and Nancy has had five children their first child died. the oldest one they have is Joseph, Mary, Sarah Isabel and Amanda Caroline. Those are the names of their children.

Chancy said if he lived to get back home again he would go to see you all he expected to be gone two years from the time he left home. I hope he will not stay so long I do not know how to pass off the time it appears so long to me. William lives twenty- five miles from me. I am living with my father his name is Joseph Hanks. It was great pleasure to me to hear from Chancy’s people. I want you to write to me again. When I get a letter Chancy I will write to you and let you know how he is. I do not know anything of your brother. I give my love to father Hosier and all the friends. I must come to a close at present. I remain yours [???]

On the 1870 U. S. Census of Melrose Township, Adams Co., Illinois, J. H. Hanks age 48 is head of household and a farmer. The household consists of his mother Mary, sister Isabella, nephew J. D. C. Hosier, brother-in-law W. L. Hall, sister Mary A. Hall, and nephew J. C. Hosier. J. H. Hanks and his nephews are farmers.

On the 1880 U. S. Census of Louisana, Pike Co., Missouri Mary Hall appears with her sons John Hosier and Joe Hosier and brother John Hanks and sister Belle Hanks. Mary is keeping house, all the men are laborers and Belle is a dressmaker.

On the 1900 U. S. Census of Louisiana, Pike Co., Missouri, Mary A. Hozier appears with her sister Isabelle Hanks. Mary is a widow, was the mother of 2, zero living children. Isabelle is single. Neither list an occupation.

Mrs. Mary A. Hozier, a former resident of this city died at the home of her sister, Mrs. Catherine O. Hall at Quincy, Thursday night, February 22nd, after an illness of many years, aged 79 years. She was born in Indiana and was the daughter of Joseph Hanks, a cousin of Abraham Lincoln. The remains were brought to this city Saturday noon and were taken to Suda’s Undertaking rooms, the funeral services being conducted at the grave in the city cemetery Sunday morning by Rev. E. D. Watson.
