S. Grid Star---Howard Le Duke Escapes Accident with Cuts and Minor Injuries. Hurled through the windshield of the car in which he was riding when it struck the side of a concrete culvert one-quarter mile east of Pla-Mor pavilion on South Lawrence avenue Sunday at 4:15 p. m., Errol LaVerne Kirkpatrick, 33, salesman for the Rose Neon company and a resident of Wichita all his life, was fatally injured. Glass severed his jugular vein. He died on the operating table of a local hospital three minutes after his arrival. Howard Le Duke, 1856 South Market street, driver of the car, was hurled forward against the steering wheel and suffered lacerations and possible internal injuries. Car Smashes Into Culvert. According to witnesses, Kirkpatrick and Le Duke were driving north at a high rate of speed. The culvert is located on a turn of the pavement and the heavy Cadillac car evidently was going too fast to stay on the pavement. The machine struck the culvert with such force that the engine was driven back in its frame. Both men were hurled forward. Spectators rushed to the scene and lifted the men from the wreckage. Others ran to telephones and called for aid. The car remained upright in the road, jammed into the culvert side. Bleeding profusely from his throat and with numerous cuts on the face and head, Kirkpatrick was placed in a Gill ambulance and rushed to a local hospital. A city ordinance requiring ambulances to hold speed to 25 miles an hour had to be observed and the Wichitan was almost dead when the operating room was reached. A Lahey and Martin ambulance took Le Duke to St. Francis hospital where he was reported to be resting comfortably late last night. He had a severe gash under the chin, in addition to other injuries. Was Star Football Player. Kirkpatrick was well known to hundreds of people in Wichita. He was born and reared in the city. He was captain of the Wichita High school football team in 1913 and is credited with making the longest run for a touchdown ever made in a high school game here. After completing high school, Kirkpatrick attended Fairmount college for a year and later spent a term at Friends university. He played on both football teams. In 1917 Mr. Kirkpatrick enlisted in the twenty-sixth balloon company and went to France where he spent 18 months in the service, much of it on the front in observation work. Returning to Wichita, Kirkpatrick entered the employ of the H. W. Cardwell Thresher and Tractor company and until two months ago was the firm's representative in Dodge City. He entered the employ of the Rose Neon company on East Douglas avenue two months ago. A good salesman, he was well thought of in Wichita and was popular among his friends. Mr. Kirkpatrick was a member of the Union Commercial Travelers, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and held a membership in the American Legion. He was a close friend of Thomas Hopkins after whom the Legion post here is named. He is survived by a daughter, Delores LaVern; his father, George W. Kirkpatrick, 902 1/2 West Douglas avenue; two sisters, Mrs. W. A. Dadisman, 1324 West Douglas avenue, and Ruby Orcutt, 519 South Lawrence avenue, and one brother, Paul Kirkpatrick of the Wichita fire department. He made his home with his father and brother. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Gill mortuary is in charge.

Hold Services Wednesday. Funeral services for Errol L. Kirkpatrick, killed in an auto crash on South Lawrence avenue Sunday, will be held at the Gill mortuary Wednesday at 4 p. m. Rev. R. L. George pastor of Trinity Methodist Episcopal church, will officiate. Burial will be in College Hill Memorial lawns.
