Jesse Haynes

On the 1840 U. S. Census of Wayne, Clinton Co., Ohio Jesse Haynes is listed with one female age 20-30. This is probably Jesse and Susan before their first child was born.
On the 1860 U. S. Census of Newport Township, Johnson Co. Iowa, Jesse Haines appears with his wife Susan and children Sarah, May, Lucy, Elizabeth, Matilda, Huston and Joseph. Jesse is a farmer. Jesse was born in Tennessee, his wife was born in Virginia. Sarah and Mary were born in Ohio, all the rest of the children were born in Iowa.
On the 1870 U. S. Census of Washington Township, Crawford Co., Kansas, Jesse Haynes appears with his wife Susan and children Matilda, Houston, Joseph, Flora and George W.
On the 1880 U. S. Census of Washington Township, Crawford Co., Kansas Jessee [sic] appears with his wife Susan and children Houston, Joseph, Flora and George. Jessee is a farmer.
Obituary from Pittsburg Smelter, Saturday, Feb. 4, 1882: Haines---In Washington township, on January 31st, 1882, Jesse Haines, aged about 66 years. Hesse Haines was one of the pioneer settlers on the Nentral Lands*, and has passed through all stages of hardships usually experienced by the settler. He had built himself a home by years of toil and stringent economy. He leaves several children to mourn his departure.
Jesse Haynes is buried at the Shirley Cemetery in Crawford County, Kansas. It was abandoned for years according to reports in the Pittsburg, Kansas newspaper in Jan. 26, 1951 and Jan. 31, 1951. A picture of Gwen Tersinar taken in 1998 at the cemetery shows that it has been cleaned up.
*Nentral Lands are Cherokee or Osage lands in the southeast corner of Kansas.
