In The Daily Grit, Worland, Washakie Co., Wyoming, December 1, 1943: Pioneer of Big Horn Basin Dies. Ten Sleep--(Special) Death yesterday claimed another Big Horn basin pioneer--Mrs. Emma J. Smith, 78, who settled at Hyattville, in 1886. Although she had spent most of her life at Hyattville, she had been living at Ten Sleep and died at the home of her son, Joe Smith. The Velle mortuary is in charge of the funeral arrangements, but plans are indefinite pending word from her sons and daughters who live in other states. Mrs. Smith was born Aug. 7, 1865, and moved with her husband to Hyattville in 1886. There they homesteaded what is the present Renner ranch. Her husband died 12 years ago. She is survived by four sons, Joe Smith of Ten Sleep, John J. Smith of Idaho Falls, James Smith of Denver, and Jess Smith of Ukiah, Cal., and two daughters, Mrs. Elmer Durfee of Great Fall, Montana, and Mrs. George Brown of Ten Sleep.
