Ernest Delos Culver

PLATTEVILLE - Ernest Delos "Doc" Culver, age 88, of rural Platteville, died on Tuesday, April 5, 2005, at his home. He was born on Sept. 18, 1916, in Platteville, the son of Benjamin Franklin and Vie Hester (Bayley) Culver. He was united in marriage to Genevieve Kies on Nov. 5, 1940, at the Whig United Methodist Church. "Doc" attended and graduated from Platteville Normal with a BS in American History and English, he also lettered in boxing. He taught school for one year at Ontario, and two years at Rewey. He served our country during World War II in the U.S. Air Corp and U.S. Army. He was a military policeman, instructor of American Judo, and served in the Counter Intelligence Corp. (CIC). When he was discharged from the Army he had the rank of 2nd Lieutenant. During his tour of service, he was the officer of the day for the honor guard for Winston Churchill when he came to America to visit President Roosevelt. In 1948, he and Genevieve started farming on his parents family farm. He served as town clerk for the Township of Lima for 31 years, and was sexton of the Whig Cemetery, Harrison Township for many years. He was a lifelong member of Whig United Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday school for many years. He served as youth director for the Epworth League. He enjoyed doing family genealogy, studying Native American history, traveling, and Dixieland jazz. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Genevieve of Platteville; two children, Rev. Carson Kies (Marilyn) Culver of Richland Center, and Susan Jane Culver of West Branch, Iowa; two sons-in-law, Wayne Schambow of Platteville, and Gary Oates of Beecher; four grandchildren, Joseph Oates of Platteville, Jayne (Gary) Sanders of Poynette, Sean (Myranda) Culver of Richland Center and Benjamin (Tanya) Culver of Viola; three great-grandchildren, Alayna, Aiden, and Allison Culver; a sister-in-law, Anna Beth Culver of LaCrosse; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Schambow on Sept. 14, 2000; his parents; a brother, Jerry Culver; and two sisters, Hila Heffernan and Augusta Stephens. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 8, 2005, at the Whig United Methodist Church. The Rev. Tom Noffke will officiate. Burial will be at Whig Cemetery, Harrison Township where military rites will be accorded. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, 2005 at the Bendorf Funeral Home, Platteville, friends may also call on Friday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the Whig Cemetery Association. The Bendorf Funeral Home is serving the family.
