Individual Details
Alice EGAN
(28 Jan 1851 - )
Alice's baptismal sponsors were Michael Reilly and Anna Jones.
Alice is listed in the 1871 census as a member of the household of her sister and brother-in-law Mary and Archibald Dunn in Hampstead, London. Included with Alice are her other sisters, Fanny and Beatrice. All three unmarried sisters are listed again with Mary and Archibald in the 1881 census, along with their brother Alfred, at 6 Westgate Terrace, Kensington, London.
The will of Alice's brother Edmund, written on 16 March 1926 (12 days before his death), tells us that Alice was living in Belgium at the time (she would have been 70 years of age): "I direct that if my said sister Alice Egan shall die in Belgium, the expense of her funeral shall be paid by my trustees out of the capital of my residual estate". We do not know what brought Alice to Belgium, nor do we have any information on where and when she died. It could be that she was in a convent there as it was not uncommon for English nuns to serve in Belgium, particularly in a teaching capacity. For whatever reason she was in Belgium we can safely say she was unmarried as Edmund's will refers to her as Alice Egan.
