William (Bill) FINUCANE

(Abt 30 Mar 1869 - 23 Sep 1957)

I have been told by one family source that Bill was one of the 'Gale Bridge Finucanes' of Cuss, Moyvane, although he farmed in Clounprohus where he was born. However, Cuss adjoins Clounprohus and it appears the Gale Bridge Finucanes and Clounprohus Finucanes are the same family.

It appears Bill inherited the family farm in Clounprohus, which is surprising as he had older brothers. His eldest brother, Michael, farmed in Cuss.

I am told that Bill was a staunch nationalist.

I can find no documented blood connection between Bill and his wife's great-grandmother, Margaret Finucane (who married Richard Hudson). However, I have been told by Hudson family researcher Bill Hudson that the Finucanes of Carhoonakineely, Tarbert, are related to Margaret ("fourth cousins of some type") and are very distantly related to Bill, although the exact connection to Bill is not known. The Carhoonakineely Finucanes and the Gale Bridge Finucanes do seem to be connected. For one thing, Bill's brother Michael is described as a cousin of Carhoonakineely-born Margaret Finucane of Faranawanna, Tarbert in her obituary in The Kerryman of 23 May 1908. Furthermore, in a short piece by Maurice N. Cotter in The Kerry Reporter of 14 April 1928 on William S. Finucane, a public official in Chicago, it is stated that William S. was a "kinsman of the Finucanes of Tarbert and our own William Finucane of Gale Bridge". Maurice himself, who was from Knocknagoshel, Co. Kerry but lived in Chicago, was married to Katie Finucane from Carhoonakineely so he would be in a position to know. However, William S. Finucane's ancestors appear to have come from Co. Clare, according to various online family trees.

Finucane researchers may be interested in knowing a little more about William S. who was a successful businessman and politician (Republican) in Chicago. The above Kerry Reporter piece concerned his candidacy for a position on the trustee board of the Sanitary District of Chicago; and he went on to be elected to the Illinois House of Representatives in 1939, holding his seat until his death in 1951. William Sidney Finucane was born in Illinois in 1888 to Thomas James Finucane (born 1858 in Illinois) and Mary Stella Bonfield. Thomas was a son of Michael Finucane (born 1821 in Co. Clare) and Margaret Dillon. Unfortunately I have seen no evidence linking William S's family to mine, nor have I come across any proof that my Finucanes had Clare connections. If anyone can shed any light I would be very grateful if you could email HelensFamilyTrees@gmail.com.
