Patrick FINUCANE
(Abt 1818 - 4 Aug 1902)
I do not know where exactly in Kerry Patrick was born. According to his marriage record he lived in Leitrim, Moyvane, Co. Kerry, so he may have been born there. However he and his wife, Kitty, raised their family in Clounprohus, Moyvane so he may have come from there. Kitty had Leitrim connections in that her brother Maurice farmed in Leitrim East. Perhaps he was working on Maurice's or a neighbouring farm when he met Kitty. There is an entry in Griffith's Valuation (carried out in 1851 for North Kerry) for a John Finucane of Clounprohus. I think it likely John and Patrick were related. Perhaps John was Patrick's father and Patrick got the Clounprohus farm upon his marriage. This is of course all pure conjecture.
Patrick and Kitty's eldest son, Michael, lived and farmed in Cuss, Gale Bridge, Moyvane, which seems surprising as one would have thought he would inherit the Clounprohus farm, which appears to have gone to a younger brother, Bill. Cuss lies just to the north of Clounprohus, the townlands being separated by the Galey river. It could be that the Finucanes had land on both sides of the river, with the Cuss land going to Michael? However, this is pure speculation. Note that although we do not know which of the Leitrim townlands Patrick was from (Leitrim East, Leitrim West or Leitrim Middle), Leitrim West lies just to the north of Cuss.
Patrick died of cardiac disease at the age of about 84.
