Individual Details
Ellen DEVINE
(Abt 1849 - 11 Sep 1854)
Ellen's death certificate tells us she died of cholera, the duration of which was eight days. She was only five years of age. The informant was her father, Daniel, of 2 Marlborough Court in the parish of St. James.
Ellen was a victim of the 1854 Broad St. (now Broadwick St.) cholera epidemic in Soho, caused most likely by contaminated water from the Broad St. pump, located close to the Devine family home at 2 Marlborough Court and built near a cesspit that developed a leak. The outbreak lasted from the end of August to the end of September 1854 by which time more than 600 Soho residents had died of the disease.
