Daniel DEVINE

(Abt 1822 - Bet 11 Sep 1854 and 27 Oct 1877)

According to both his marriage certificate and the 1851 census, Daniel was a shoemaker. However, the death certificate of his son Michael, who died aged 11 in 1862, tells us he was a soldier.

We know that Daniel predeceased his brother John who died in October 1877 and it seems likely he died between 1854 and the 1861 census as he was alive at the time of the death of his daughter, Ellen, in 1854, while his son Michael is listed in the 1861 census, without his parents, as part of the household of his grandmother Catherine Devine. Michael's death certificate from 1862 gives the informant as a Michael Devine, his uncle perhaps, as Michael's uncle Michael Devine was still alive in 1862. One would have expected the informant to have been the father as it often was in those times, but Daniel may have died by 1862 or perhaps he was away from home on army duties. Further investigation needs to be carried out here.
