Mary Ann MEAD

(Abt 1819 - Bef Prob 1861)

According to their marriage certificate, the address of both Mary Ann and Daniel was 30 Windmill St., presumably in the parish of St. James, where they were married. The certificate also tells us that Mary Ann was a waistcoat maker and her father, John, a tailor. By the time of the 1851 census Mary Ann, Daniel and their two young children were living at 6 Little Dean Street (renamed Bourchier Street in 1937), Soho in the parish of St. Ann in Westminster. Mary Ann was still working as a waistcoat maker.

The 1861 census shows a widowed Mary Ann Devine, aged 40 and a needlewoman, living as a lodger in the St. James's area. However, her place of birth is given as London rather than Ireland. Nevertheless, there is a (slight) possibility that this is our Mary Ann. I think it more likely, however, that Mary Ann had died prior to the 1861 census given that her son, Michael, is listed without his parents in that census as a member of the household of his grandmother Catherine Devine.
