Thomas (Tom) MOLONEY
(23 Jun 1917 - 16 Apr 1986)
Tom's baptismal sponsors were John Moloney and Catherine Fitzgerald.
Tom received his primary education at the local national school in Islandanny (1924-1931) and his secondary schooling at St. Michael's College, Listowel (1931-1937). He studied philosophy at Mungret College, Co. Limerick (1937-39) and theology at St. Patrick's Seminary in Thurles, Co. Tipperary (1939-42) before being ordained a priest on 13 June 1943 for the diocese of San Diego, California. Due to the war he was unable to travel to San Diego immediately and was sent to work as an assistant in the parish of St. Joseph in Mosley, near Manchester (September 1944 - August 1945).
Tom finally arrived in San Diego in the summer of 1946 and was appointed assistant at Our Lady of The Sacred Heart (1946-1950), St. Joseph's Cathedral (1950-1952) and St. Vincent's (1952). He was then promoted to pastor and served in this capacity at Sacred Heart in Bryn Mawr (1952-1955), Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Riverside (1955-1966) and finally at Our Lady of Grace in El Cajon (1966-1986). He also served as Dean and Episcopal Vicar of El Cajon Deanery and was given the title Monsignor in 1970. After suffering an aneurysm, he died during corrective surgery at Grossmount Hospital, El Cajon, California in April 1986. His body was brought home to Ireland and he was buried in Abbeyfeale.
