Mary CAREY

Sponsors at Mary's baptism were Michael Carey and Margaret Hanley. Mary's surname appears as "Keary' in the baptism register.
Mary was about 30 years younger than her husband, Thomas. Thomas and his brother Denis were involved in a lengthy and bitter dispute in the late 1860s and early 1870s over their mother's will. The battle for the family farm led to violence, including an attack on Mary by Denis in October 1873 while she was pregnant. He received a prison sentence for the crime.
At the time of the 1911 census, Mary, by then widowed, was living with her son Martin in Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary where Martin was working as manager of the gasworks. When he was appointed manager of the gasworks in Wicklow town and later Fermoy, Co. Cork Mary seems to have gone with him as an extract from the 1851 census dated 31 March 1920 (the census was probably checked to verify Mary's pension eligibility) gives her address in 1920 as "c/o M. J. Treacy, Gasworks, Fermoy".
