John HANRAHAN
(ABT 1780S - )
Much of the information below on the Hanrahan family comes from Pádraig Kenny, a great-great-grandson of John's son Michael. Pádraig, who has been hugely helpful to me in my research, has in his possession an old page of notes, found in a drawer, which outlines the family tree of the Hanrahan family in Kilbaha into which a number of my blood relatives married. The notes indicate that Michael's siblings were Denis, Jim, Paddy and Cornelius (Corney), and the information given on Paddy's descendants matches information I came across independently while researching my Cunningham ancestors (Margaret Cunningham, a great-grandaunt of mine, married Paddy's son John). Using these notes as a basis an extensive Hanrahan fmily history has been built up. Note: it is possible that John above also had a daughter named Ellen as a baptism record has been located (on www.irishgenealogy.ie) for an Ellen Hanrahan of Kilbaha who married a John Shine in Moyvane on 11 February 1834.
Other Hanrahans who may have a connection to John above (although we have no proof) are:
Patrick Hanrahan who was living in Kilbaha in the 1820s as baptism records have been located (on www.irishgenealogy.ie) for two children of a Patrick Hanrahan and his wife, Margaret Mulvihill of Kilbaha: Patrick was baptised on 10 February 1823 and Michael on 24 August 1825.
And a marriage record has been located for a Margaret Hanrahan of Kilbaha who married a John Kennelly of Kilbaha on 7 February 1861 (the fathers' names are not shown). Could Margaret have been related to John above? A Michael Hanrahan witnessed the marriage.
The Hanrahan surname is numerous throughout Ireland, especially in Munster and south Leinster. The name is derived from from the Irish "Ó h-Anracháin", meaning "warrior".
Note from Helen: Neither my husband nor I am related by blood to the Hanrahan family. However, several members of my family (e.g., Cunninghams) have married Hanrahans or Hanrahan descendants over the generations, hence my interest.
