Patrick farmed in the townland of Clegna (sometimes spelled Cleigna), Cootehall, Co. Roscommon. He was known locally as 'the Colonel'. The story goes that when when he and his brother Laurence were young, they had a quarrel. To settle the matter their father arranged a boxing contest, which Patrick won. As a result of his success, people started calling him 'the Colonel' and the nickname stuck.
