Ellen's civil birth record states she was born on 20 January 1868 whereas her baptism record is dated 24 November 1867. This may have been because the birth, which by law had to to registered within a certain time period following the birth, was registered late and in order to avoid paying a fine for late registration, a later birth date (that complied with the law) was provided. In general, a baptismal date is more reliable than a birth date, where they differ. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that Ellen was born in November 1867 rather than January 1868.
