Individual Details

Michael Joseph MORAHAN

(31 May 1877 - 19 Sep 1939)

Michael began his working life as a boat builder in Killarney alongside his father in the family business, Morahan & Son, and moved to London sometime in the 1890s. The 1901 census of England tells us he had become a sculptor by then, and in the 1911 census he is described as a "sculptor - carver and modeller".

His address in 1901 was 60 Fentiman Road in Vauxhall, and by 1911 he was living at 7 Vale Cottages, Kingston Vale, Putney. His father's death record a year later has him at the same address (Michael was the informant). A later address of Michael's (source not recorded) was 32 Fairfield South, Kingston upon Thames, Surrey.

Michael's sculpting jobs in England included the carving of a number of the gargoyles at Hampton Court Palace as part of a restoration project.
