For about 33 years of his married life, Ernie was a farmer on a 10 acre truck farm, one and a half miles northwest of Burlington, Calhoun County, Michigan, and three miles south of the sixteen acres his father Casper
bought after returning from the Tennessee trip. Ernie returned to Michigan early from that trip to marry Lottie. He worked for a short time in Kellogg's Corn Flake factory in Battle Creek and later operated a milk route in Lansing , Michigan, before he bought the ten acres at Burlington. He was a good teamster and during winter skidded logs at nearby sawmills. He also worked some time with township or county road gangs hauling gravel or using a slip scraper. He loved horses but never owned one he wouldn't trade. He especially like a pair of matched sorrels named Colonel and Queen. The trader that finally got this tean from Ernie subsequently advertised as follows:
Up for sale:
A handsomer pair never was seen
Show me a pimple from tip to tip
And I will give you the span without more lip.
Ernie cut this verse out of the paper and carried it for years in his billfold until it was worn to shreds. That team drew a crowd wherever they were seen and was one team Ernie ie probably regretted trading.
On the ten acre truck farm the main kind of produce raised was strawberries, sweetcorn, potatoes, cucumbers and melons. Corn and oats for the chickens and livestock was raised on shares on neighbouring farmes. Produce, butter and eggs were peddled each Thursday in Battle Creek. In the late 1930's , Lottie took a job for a short time in a Union City restaurant and later on worked in a chicken cannery in Tekonsha , Michigan. During WWII and after the children were raised and gone, Ernie and Lottie sold out and moved to the city (Battle Creek). Ernie worked for a few years for the AB Stove Company and Lottie worked in the kitchen of the Battle Creek Sanatraium. After Ernie passed away, Lottie lived alone for a year or so before selling their home and moving to Berrien Springs, Michigan, to live with Marjorie, their daughter. Lottie died 18 Dec 1973. The life spans of Ernie and Lottie were nearly the same. There were six years and twelve days difference in their ages and six years and one day difference in their death dates. They are both buried in Barrington cemetery near Burlington, Michigan, a couple of miles north of the ten acres where they raised their truck crops and their children.
