Obituary: Funeral services will be held 3:00 Wednesday June 24, 2009 at the Geesey-Ferguson Funeral Home for Shirley Hoffpauir Crawford, 100, who Passed away at 7:00 a.m. June 20, 2009 at Park Manor of Houston, Texas. Rev. Charles Floyd will conduct the funeral services and the Committal services at the Woodlawn Mausoleum. The family request visitation be observed Tuesday from 4:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. and Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until service time. She was born June 3rd 1909 to John Edward and Ina O'Mealey Hoffpauir and was the Granddaughter of Minerva Jane Cain and George Henry O'Mealey and Sophronia and Elbert Gant Hoffpauir. Shirley married George W. Crawford April 12, 1938. They were married for over fifty years and lived in California, New Orleans, and Crowley. Mrs. Crawford was a teacher with Acadia Parish schools for over thirty-two years and a member of the Retired Teachers of Acadia Parish. She began teaching following two years of teacher prep at S.L.I. and taught at a one-room school where she had to "light the stove in the winter and sweep and clean the room". Mrs Crawford was a lifelong member of the Ebenezer Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Dorcas Circle. She provided floral arrangements for the church for many years. She was a talented seamstress, a great cook, and a wonderful gardener. Mrs. Crawford was a long time member of the Ebenezer Home Demonstration Club and wrote articles for the newspaper about gardening. She served as a judge for the Rice Festival for floral arrangements. For many years she was the driving force behind North Crowley's float in the Children's Parade. While living at Landmark, Mrs. Crawford was Volunteer of the year several times and President of the Residents' Council ten years in a row. She developed a "Friday Baking" for the residents at Landmark and would try out new recipes and old family favorites for afternoon coffee there. She was their Mardi-Gras queen and participated in the dress up days with much enthusiasm. She was "Mamma Shirl" to many of her daughters' friends always with an open door and an open heart. She was preceded in death by her husband George, her daughter Eleanor "Chi Chi" Coleman, sister Eleanor Jane Hoffpauir, brothers Donald, George, and Lloyd Hoffpauir, sisters-in law Eula and Celie Pearl Hoffpauir, niece Celie H. Lejeune, nephew John A. Hoffpauir, cousins Gladys Robinette, Bulah Dommert, Grace Allen, Hattie Stilley, Iva Mae Elliott, Wava H. Hoffpauir, and Hugh Hoffpauir. She is survived by her youngest daughter Kayren Ann and son-in-law John A. Mingus III of Houston Texas. Mrs. Crawford is also survived by her four grandchildren: Liz McDaniel of Houston, William J. McDaniel and his wife Sara of Kaplan, Shannon Otermat and her husband Steve, and John F. Coleman III of Houston, sister-in-law Antonia Hoffpauir of Ebenezer, sister-in-law Mildred Fitzgerald of Roanoke, Virginia, Great-grandchildren: William "Liam" C. and Max R. McDaniel, and Quinn and Reid Otermat, and her caregiver Donna Davis of Houston. The family would like to thank her caregiver Donna Davis of Houston for years of dedication and loving care.
