Individual Details
Anna Marie Aucoin
(30 Mar 1910 - 4 Mar 1990)
Anna Marie Aucoin was the youngest child of Palmire Comeaux and Joseph Aucoin. She was born near New Iberia, LA, and moved to Lake Charles by the time she was in High School. I recall her saying that she worked at the five and dime store in Lake Charles as a young lady, prior to her marriage.
She tells of knowing "of" Frank Hoffpauir years before they ever courted. He joined the Navy in 1926, when she was but 16 years old. They must have begun dating very soon after he was discharged in 1930, as they were married in 1932.
Frank said in later years that Anna almost died in the delivery of her first child, and was forced to remain in bed for many months of recovery. She went on to deliver 3 more children, with much less difficulty than she experienced with the first-born, but she suffered with complications from that difficult first birth for the rest of her life.. She often said that she wanted a girl baby very bad when the second and third children were born, but that by the time the fourth was on the way, she had more or less resolved that she was destined to have all boys.
I remember her as a very competitive person. She loved competitive games, like most card games and nearly all board games. She really hated to lose in any contest of skill, and she was skillful in everything that she undertook. I remember when I was in grammar school, she decided that she wanted to learn to play the piano, so she bought an old piano and a couple of books, and began to give herself music lessons. She enjoyed playing for the rest of her life... in later years trading the piano for a small electronic keyboard.
Anna was very much affected by an older sister, Agatha, who died of the flu in the big epidemic after WW I. She kept many pictures of Agatha, and spoke very fondly of her.
Anna often said that no one in her family lived past the age of 80. She kept a list of all her siblings, with their birth date and death date written in. She died just a few weeks before her 80th birthday. Her one surviving older sister died at the age of 83. I don't really think that she had very many happy years. She was always happy to see her children and grandchildren, but she was in great discomfort, especially in her last few years, suffering from ulcers and high blood pressure, and recurring headaches. She was in a great deal of discomfort in her last few months, with several hospitalizations in Sulphur before moving to Alvin to stay with my family just a couple of months before her death.
