Burial
Obituary: After an illness of several weeks, Mr. Alvin Morgan passed to the great beyond last Friday afternoon at 6:30 o'clock. Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at 6:30 at the family residence conducted by Revs. A. P. Bradley and J. J. Shirley. The remains were laid to rest in the Confederate cemetery. In honor to his memory every business house in town closed during the funeral services and a long procession of friends of the deceased and family followed the remains to their last resting place. Mr. Morgan was one of the first settlers of this section. Coming to Texas from Louisiana in 1873 he was a citizen of this state for thirty-six years. In 1878 he moved here when there was very few houses between Houston and Galveston and purchased from the state 100 acres of land on which the town of Alvin is now located. When the town was planned it was given Mr. Morgan's first name - Alvin, and he opened up the first store that was established in the new town, and had been a resident ever since, up to the time of his death. Warm hearted, charitable and true to his neighbors and friends, there was no one in this section more universally known and liked than Mr. Morgan. Besides a devoted wife, he leaves four children to mourn his death, three of whom reside in Louisiana, and his daughter, Mrs. Theo. M. Savell, who resides here, to whom this whole community extend their sympathy and condolence. Mr. Morgan was born in Louisiana in 1843 and was 66 years old. He will always be remembered by the first settlers of this section, as well as all who have lived here during the many years of his residence. (Alvin Sun, Alvin, Texas, Friday May 14, 1909)Endnotes
