She is in the caption (provided by Deborah Penny in September 2001) to a 1909 photo taken outside her husband's grandparents' home in Italy, Texas, as being the wife of Ciscero Briles. Thus, we know that she was alive in 1909. Jack E. Briles, Sr., provided the spelling of her first name as "Lila" in Feb. 2002.
Deborah gives her birth date as January 1883. However, other sources (Mormon Genealogy Library in Salt Lake City) show that his wife as a Lea May who was born in January 1882 and the 1900 U.S. Census for Ellis County, Texas, specifically gives her birth date as January 1882, so that is the birth date used for Lela in these files even though the headstone that she shares with her husband Ciscero H. Briles gives her birth year as 1883.
1920 U.S. Census for the 8th Justice Precinct of Ellis County, Texas (Series T625, Roll 1800, Page 258) provides the following information:
Lela Briles: Head of Household, White, Female, Age 36, Widow, Born in Texas, Parents both born in Mississippi, Occupation = Farmer.
Mallie [could be Mollie] Briles: Daughter of Lela Briles, White, Female, Age 14, Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Robert Briles: Son of Lela Briles, White, Male, Age 12, Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Pat H. Briles: Son of Lela Briles, White, Male Age 6 [twin of Mattie E. Briles], Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
Mattie E. Briles: Daughter of Lela Briles, White, Female, Age 6 [twin of Pat H. Briles], Single, Born in Texas, Father born in NC, Mother born in Texas.
