SISSETON — Philip Edward Briles, 86, Sisseton, Wednesday, Nov. 14, 2007, at a Sisseton hospital.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, Nov. 19, at the Grace Lutheran Church, Sisseton with the Rev. Bob Beasley and the Rev. Vernon Donnell officiating. Organist will be Marcia Peterson.
Burial will be in the Sisseton Cemetery with military rites by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and the Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342. Pallbearers will be David and Paul Vig, Joey and Tom Hamm, Max Briles, Gary Gaikowski, and Jon Gilles. Honorary Pallbearers will be all of his friends.
The Cahill Funeral Chapel of Sisseton is in charge of arrangements.
He was born on Nov. 28, 1920, to Eula (Horney) and N.R. Briles at Hortonville, Ind. At the age of two, he and his parents moved to Sorato, Bolivia, South America, where his parents were missionaries for twelve years.
In 1934, he returned to Indiana to attend high school. Following high school he attended Marion College in Marion, Ind. It was at Marion College that he met his wife to be, Olive Josephine McGovern.
He served in the United States Army from March 1943 to Dec. 1945. He received the Good Conduct Medal and the Meritorious Unit Citation.
He was united in marriage to Olive McGovern on Dec. 28, 1945, at Mitchell. He finished his education and graduated from Dakota Wesleyan College. In 1954, they moved to Canton, where they owned and operated the Coast to Coast Hardware Store. From 1959 until 1963 he worked as a social Worker for Minnehaha County. He accepted the position of Social Service representative for the Sisseton Bureau of Indian Affairs in 1963 and retired in 1983.
The Sisseton-Wahpeton Sioux Tribe made him an honorary tribal member. At that time he was only the second person to be so honored. He was given the Indian name "wacin/yampi". He said "This is the greatest honor I could receive."
His wife Olive died in Dec. 1986.
He was united in marriage to Doris Stanton on Dec. 12, 1987. After retiring from the BIA, he worked for the Sisseton Super Valu until he was 80 years old.
In 2006 he moved into the Tekawitha Living Center. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he served on the Church Council and sang in the choir. He served as president of the Kiwanis and was a 60-year member of the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50. Throughout his life he had the opportunity to travel, and was proud of his adventures in nineteen different countries and 47 different states.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Peter Briles.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Briles of Sisseton; one son David (Becky) Briles of Madison, Wisc.; two daughters, Janis (Doug) Hamm of Sisseton, and Sharon (Dennis) Trudell of Wahpeton, N.D.; one stepson, Richard (Christina) Stanton of London, England; two sisters, Mrs. Jauna Mase of Tucson, Ariz., and Mrs. Susan Smit of St. Louis, Mo.; two brothers, Jesse (Ruby) Briles of Avon, Ohio, and David (Gay) Briles of Romulus, Mich.; seven grandchildren; two stepgranddaughters; and 14 great-grandchildren.
