Olive Josephine McGovern

Olive Briles, 66, sister of former Sen. George McGovern, D-SD, died Saturday in Sioux Valley Hospital. Mrs. Briles was a longtime educator in the Sisseton school system. She also taught at Volin, Parker, Mitchell and Canton. At the time of her death, she was teaching at the Sisseton-Wahpeton Community College. She was also an accomplished pianist and music teacher. She was active in the Grace Lutheran Church of Sisseton and was the church organist. Mrs. Briles had been active in Sen. McGovern's 1972 and 1984 presidential campaigns and also worked in his congressional and Senate bids. After graduating from Mitchell High School in 1939, she attended Dakota Wesleyan University and graduated from Marion College, Marion, Indiana. Olive McGovern was born November 3, 1920 to Joseph and Frances McGovern at Aberdeen. She married Philip Briles Dec 28, 1945, at Mitchell. Of his sister, McGovern said: "She was always the great champion to me all of my political life. She was an inspiration." She is survived by her husband Philip; son David of Madison, WI; daughters Mrs. Douglas (Janis) Hamm of Sisseton and Mrs. Dennis (Sharon) Trudell of Hankinson, ND; two brothers; George of Washington, DC, and Lawrence of Chicago; a sister, Mildred Brady of Tampa, Florida and six grandchildren.
