The town of New Canaan, population 18,420 covering 23.3 sq. miles is located in Fairfield County, South Western Connecticut along the New York border. It was settled in 1700 by inhabitants of Stamford and Norwalk who were drawn to the hilly grounds for their excellent timber. The colony of homes built along Clapboard and Canoe Hills became large enough to warrant establishment of an independent parish, called Canaan society in 1731. The town was incorporated from Norwalk and Stamford in 1801; in 1889 the borough of New Canaan was chartered. With the terrain being hilly and stony, the early townspeople supplemented their agricultural enterprises with light manufacturing and trading. The manufacture of shoes was begun in the town by James Benedict and his son Caleb perfected the manufacturing process that made the business worth $400,000 a year in 1832. As the town was scattered, rather than organized around a green, the people relied on itinerant peddlers for most of their hardware and fabric supply. Also, with the excellent supply of timber, the new Canaan Nurseries, once the largest in New England, was established in 1848. (from www.town-usa.com/connecticut/fairfield/newcanaan.html)
