John WOLF

(From 1770 to 1780 - Abt 1859)

A John Wolf Sr. and Jr. are listed in the 1800 septennial census for Mahanoy Township, Northumberland County, Pennsylvania. John Wolf later purchased property in 1813 and 1817 in Lower Mahantangto Township, Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania and is listed in the 1820 census there. The John Wolf Jr. in the 1800 septennial census and John Wolf in Lower Mahantongo Township are felt to be the same person. John Wolf in Lower Mahantongo Township named his oldest son John Wolf. It is very probable that John Wolf Sr. in the 1800 septennial census for Mahanoy Township was his father. Jonas Wolfgang was also living in this township in 1800. John Wolf in Lower Mahantongo Township married Christina Wolfgang, a sister of Jonas Wolfgang.

Jefferson County Pennsylvania by McKnight (1917) on page 506 states "A German settlement was made in the early forties near what is now Knox Dale by the Baileys, Wolfs and Rhodeses. To procure ready money these persons marketed in Brookville large quantities of chestnuts, berries, and other wild fruits."
Dorothy Mauk, a great granddaughter of John Wolf, said John and Christina Wolf came from Armstrong County on a raft down Redbank Creek and Sandy Lick and landed at "Wolf Landing" on Fuller Run (near Fuller). Wolf Landing does not appear on any map.

A John Wolf Senior appears in the septennial census for Mahantango Township also.

Death

A. L. Gordon was appointed as administrator of the estate of John Wolf who died intestate without a will about 1859. He filed the first and final account with the Jefferson County Court on 10 July 1862. Copies of vouchers for money paid to Christina Wolf by A. L. Gordon, administrator of John Wolf Sr., deceased were included in the estate papers. The vouchers were witnessed by Daniel Wolf. She received the following payments:
