The following information was used to determine the identity of James Kennedy's parents: William and Julia Ann Peddicord. James' son Smith Kennedy was living with Daniel McFarland in the 1870 census in Brush Valley Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. James' son Howard was living with Daniel McFarland in the 1880 census in Brush Valley Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. According to a biography for Captain Daniel McFarland in the Indiana County History by Stewart, he was married to Sarah Kennedy. William and Juliann Kennedy are living near Daniel McFarland and his wife Sarah in the 1850 census in Brush Valley Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Julia A. Kennedy is living near Daniel McFarland and his wife Sarah in the 1860 census in Brush Valley Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. Julia Kennedy is living near Daniel McFarland in the 1870 census in Brush Valley Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. A biographical article on the Kennedy family of Indiana County, Pennsylvania in the Genealogical and Personal History of Beaver County, Pennsylvania by Jordan states that the maiden name of William Kennedy's wife was Peddicord and that they had three children: Samuel, James, and Sarah.
James and Nancy (McCoy) Kennedy named their oldest son William Smith Kennedy. William was James father's name and Smith was the maiden name of Nancy's mother. James remarried in 1878 after his first wife Nancy's death. None of his children lived with him after he remarried.
According to James' granddaughters Eva and Pearl Kennedy, their father Daniel McCoy left home when he was 16 since he did not get along with his father. He was living with a Smith Templeton and his wife Elizabeth in the 1870 census in Conemaugh Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania. His daughters Eva and Pearl Kennedy said he took a wall clock and a trunk when he left home. The wall clock hung over the mantle in the sitting room and the trunk was in a small first floor bedroom when I visited their home while they were living. James' youngest child Margaret was living with Daniel McCoy Kennedy and his wife Evaline in the 1880 census in Conemaugh Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.
James was supported by the Overseers of the Poor in Young Township, Indiana County, Pennsylvania in 1900. As a result, the Court ordered Daniel and Smith Kennedy to pay 75 cents a week each towards their father's support. The only death record found for James Kennedy was a notice in the Indiana Weekly Messenger on 25 June 1902.
