Individual Details
John Daniel HELMAN
(17 Nov 1760 - Bet 8 Aug 1850 and 1860)
Three sons of John Daniel Helman, Sr. and Elizabeth Sell moved to Indiana County, Pennsylvania: George Helman, Jacob Helman, and Samuel Helman. His other three known sons and daughter remained in Shade and Paint Townships in Somerset County, Pennsylvania: John Daniel Helman, Jr., Frederick Helman, John Helman, and Elizabeth Seese. Some people attribute another son, Michael Helman, to John Daniel Helman, Sr. Michael Helman supposedly returned to Franklin County but no further information is available regarding him.
Daniel owned land in Franklin County, Pennsylvania that he sold before moving to Somerset County, Pennsylvania. He sold his land in Somerset County by 1834 and there are no further land transactions for him after that. He did not leave a will and there are no estate records for him in Somerset County. He and his children lived in Shade and Paint Townships in Somerset County, Pennsylvania. Although we do not have a written record naming his children, he was the only male Helman living in Somerset County in the 1810 census. He appears with his sons George and Jacob Helman in the 1820 census in Shade Township, Somerset County. Shade Township was formed in 1816 from Stonycreek Township where Daniel Helman was living in the 1810 census. Daniel Helman, Sr. and his sons: Daniel, Jr., Frederick, George, and Samuel Helman are living in Shade Township in the 1830 census. Daniel Helman, Sr. and his son John are living in Paint Township, Somerset County in the 1840 census while his sons, Daniel, Jr., and Frederick Helman, are living in Shade Township in the 1840 census. Paint Township was formed in 1836 from Shade Township where Daniel Helman, Sr. and all his sons were living in the 1830 census. George Helman, Jacob Helman, and Samuel Helman are living in Indiana County in the 1840 census. Daniel Helman, Sr. and his son John are living in Paint Township while Daniel Helman, Sr.'s sons, Daniel, Jr. and Frederick Helman, are living in Shade Township in the 1850 census. Since there were no other Helmans living in Somerset County during this time period and Daniel Helman, Sr. and his sons are living in close proximity to one another, it can be assumed that Daniel Helman, Sr. and George, Jacob, Daniel, Jr., Frederick, John, and Samuel Helman born from about 1780+ to 1805 are his sons.
John Helman, a son of Daniel Helman, sold property in 1858 (Somerset County Deed Book 62, page 612). This deed states this property "became vested into Samuel Murphy, known as part of Daniel Helman's improvements." Samuel Murphy patented land from the State of Pennsylvania containing 38 acres, 19 perches on 25 August 1848. The survey for this land in Survey Book C157, page 84 for Pennsylvania shows Daniel Helman's claim just south of this land. This has to be for Daniel Helman Sr. since his son Daniel Helman Jr. never lived in Paint Township. Daniel Helman Sr. was living in Paint Township in the 1840 and 1850 census as was his son John Helman. The WPA did a map of all the warrants in Paint Township that shows where they are in relationship to one another. Since the map shows the 38 acre parcel patented in Samuel Murphy's name, it is possible to see where Daniel Helman was probably living in Paint Township in the 1840 and 1850 census.
Although Daniel Helman was baptized in the Reformed church, no baptismal records have been found for any of his children. Solomon's Reformed Church at Grindstone Hill near Chambersburg, Pennsylvania where many Helmans are buried does not have a baptismal register for the time period when Daniel's children would have been born. Since many of Daniel's descendants belonged to the Church of the Brethren. it is also possible that he may have been a member of this church. Since they don't believe in infant baptism, they don't maintain a baptismal record as the Lutheran and Reformed churches do.
