George Sebastian HELMAN

(8 Jan 1725 - 15 Feb 1784)

There was a Sebastian Hellman(n) living in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania with a wife Anna Margretha that had children baptized by the Rev. Jacob Lischy beginning 4 November 1752. This was not the Bastian Hellman that arrived on the ship Brothers in September, 1752. Sebastian Hellman and wife Margaretha were sponsors for a child of Lorentz Stambach, baptized by Rev. Jacob Lischy in March 1752 in York County, Pennsylvania.

Thus, the Bastian Hellman that arrived on the ship Brothers in September, 1752 was George Sebastian Helman. He was married to Christina and they had a son Joh. Daniel baptized in Lancaster County on 17 November 1760. There was a Gorg and Christina Hellman that had a daughter Maria Catharina baptized 26 May 1754 by Rev. Jacob Lischy and a daughter Sussanna baptized 19 April 1756 by Rev. Jacob Lischy. This was probably in York County, Pennsylvania since this is where Rev. Jacob Lischy served various congregations. George Sebastian Helman had a daughter Catharine and a daughter Susanna that married John Sell according to deed and probate records in Franklin County, Pennsylvania.

Did George Sebastian Helman live in York County before moving to Lancaster County where his son Joh. Daniel was baptized in 1760? George Sebastian Helman served as a corporal in the Revolutionary War under Captain Samuel Royar from Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Cumberland County was formed in 1750 from part of Lancaster County and Franklin County was formed in 1784 from part of Cumberland County. George Sebastian Helman was living in Franklin County, Pennsylvania when he died in 1784. Did he move from York County to Lancaster County and then to Franklin County (formerly part of Cumberland County) where he died? Perhaps deeds and tax records may help answer some of these questions.

George Sebastian Helman applied to Pennsylvania for the right to have land surveyed in Antrim and Guilford Townships in Cumberland County in 1766 and 1767. He made three applications under the name of George Helman in 1766 for 100 acres each and one application in 1767 under the name of Sebastian Helman for 250 acres. He had land surveyed under two of the applications but never received a warrant. Application number 1123 dated 4 September 1766 was surveyed 26 October 1766 for 127 acres. Pennsylvania later issued warrants to the following people for application number 1123: Daniel Leip for 79 acres, 66 perches; Joseph Witmore for 53 acres, 81 perches; and George Helman (son of George Sebastian Helman) for 2 acres, 123 perches. Application number 3714 dated 22 May 1767 was surveyed 12 May 1769 for 157 acres. Pennsylvania later issued warrants to the following people for application number 3714: Joseph Witmore for 45 acres, 88 perches; Daniel Leib for 8 3/4 acres; and George Helman (son of George Sebastian Helman) for 107 acres, 8 perches. George Helman (son of George Sebastian Helman) received a warrant in 1830 for 109 acres, 131 perches based on application numbers 1123 and 3714 and payment of five pounds sterling plus interest per 100 acres.

Although George Sebastian Helman signed his name with a XX on the ship's list, the inventory for him after he died showed he owned a Bible and three other books. He must have been literate in German if not English.
